Schools Outreach Project

In late 2007, CHRISC Kenya started a School Outreach Project in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. That initiative was in reponse to after school incidents of idleness among the school going children, poor performance in education, lack of integral information that build young people esteem, participation in community groups. The main causes of poor performance and lack of interest among the school going children was identified as lack of time for play and socialize; hitherto most of the schools approached within Nairobi lack facilities that would facilitate enjoyment as well as there is a lack of utilizing Physical Education time well for play and interaction.
This experience represents a unique opportunity for CHRISC to attempt to deal with cases of lack of access to education, rates of school drop outs, idleness, illiteracy, HIV and AIDS, and teenage pregnancy. The current rates of children not attending school due to lack of financial support is alarming and the % number of young children dropping out of school is of much concern; this exhibits the dangers that lie ahead in the future of the country. Children attending school are expected to perform beyond average level, but the current trends indicates poor performance**
A key goal of the project is to facilitate sports activities as launch pad to identifying and meeting the needs of the school children and promoting mutual relationship between CHRISC and the schools within Nairobi.
Using the approach and experience, that goal was achieved in a remarkable short time. In less than a year the project involved over 400 children in 6 schools in football training, discusion forums, fun games as well as sharing key issue affectinfg them.
Many of the children who benefited and excelled in the physical activities and training programs, have developed a passion for sports and also improved on their school performance.
CHRISC seeks to achieve this gains in the next 3 years.
